In the beginning there were two men, Mr. H. Costa and Mr. John Ferreira, that immigrated to the United States. Both were descendants of Portugal, and both were looking for a brighter and more successful future. Like most immigrants in the 1930s, they were subject to hard times due to citizenship, language, lack of work, and other problems. With some experience acquired from working in construction, they ventured in 1950 with a partnership named H. Costa Co. In the beginning, they had a small truck but no machinery. Their work in septic systems was performed through hand labor (basically the pick and shovel). As years went by, and with the help of other family members (brothers, nephews, and cousins) which also immigrated to the U.S., the company grew. In the early 1960s, H. Costa Co. terminated and two different family-owned companies came into being, called Costa & Ferreira, Inc. and S.A.F. Septic Systems, Inc. Until the year 2000, ownership of these two companies changed hands a couple of times from fathers to sons and nephews. Then, in 2000, these two split families got together again. There are three partners, all cousins.
